The American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC) applauds the commitment made today by the Asia-Pacific region's Trade Ministers to facilitate the cross-border trade and approval of energy-efficient test vehicles. Allowing the wider use throughout the Asia-Pacific of these advanced technology alternative-fueled vehicles will accelerate efforts to lower emissions and increase fuel economy across the region. At the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings this week in Hawaii, Trade Ministers from the 21 APEC member countries met and committed to develop common policies and regulations for the importation of alternative-fueled demonstration vehicles by the end of next year that have the goal of streamlining the import procedures and expediting approval processes. This commitment was a key outcome of the APEC Automotive Dialogue meetings this year, and supports "green growth" and "regulatory convergence"- two overall objectives for this United States during its host year. "We are pleased that APEC Ministers, led by the United States, have taken this important step which will provide automakers the opportunity to more readily test and demonstrate these new technologies in individual markets throughout the Asia-Pacific region," said Matt Blunt, President of the American Automotive Policy Council. "America's automakers—Chrysler, Ford and General Motors—are competitive, global manufacturers with industry-leading products and are second to none in the development of advance energy-efficient automotive technologies. America's automotive sector is already the largest exporter from the United States, and is at the forefront of the U.S. economic recovery. This development will help support and grow our international competiveness and contribution to the U.S. economy into the future," Blunt said. The American Automotive Policy Council, Inc. (AAPC) is a Washington, D.C. association that represents the common public policy interests of its member companies Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Company www.aapc.us
