PSMA/PELS seminar tackles “black magic” in high-frequency power magnetics

The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) and the IEEE Power Electronics Society (IEEE PELS) are jointly sponsoring an all-day workshop titled “Power Magnetics at High Frequency – Solving the Black Magic.” The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016, prior to the start of APEC 2016 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The workshop will focus on latest technology advances of magnetic materials, coil (winding) design, construction and fabrication techniques, characterization and measurement methods as well as modeling and simulation methods. The workshop will focus on relevant technical issues such as ac power loss measurements, core loss modeling and simulation, near magnetic field characterization, thermal constraints, inductance characterization and modeling.

Workshop attendees will include include engineers and researchers who are addressing technical requirements for power magnetics to support emerging electronic power circuit topologies. In addition the workshop will address assembly and fabrication processes and raw materials to support these magnetic component designs.

Ed Herbert, Co-Chairman of the PSMA Magnetics committee said, “This workshop will bring together the experts necessary to define and discuss the issues that have been the subject of various forums on power magnetics for high-frequency applications. With circuit designers, component manufacturers and material manufactures all together in one venue, all aspects of the issues will be addressed from design to implementation.”

Invited presentations for the workshop represent a diverse mix of researchers and industry: Dr. Charles Sullivan, Dartmouth, Dr. David Perreault, MIT and Dr Ray Ridley, Ridley Engineering will lead the plenary session with presentations addressing advancements in component construction and fabrication strategies, magnetic materials and power circuit topologies. This will be followed by an interactive panel discussion session with attendees.

A structured problem session, led by Dr Khurram Afridi, University of Colorado Boulder, James Lau, CWS and Jenna Pollock will discuss circuit design requirements through design trade-offs to final designs for different applications that require high efficiency in smaller physical volumes.

Matt Wilkowski, Altera, chair of the technical program committee said, “In addition to the structured presentations and panel Q&A, a technical demonstration session will be used to facilitate conversations on specific technical topics with representatives from Coilcraft, EMSCAN, Ferroxcube, Hitachi, Micrometals, MinDCet, Rubadue, Simplis Technologies, Transphorm, Wurth Elektronik, Vacuumschmelze and others.”
