The XC3202B is a Hall effect magnetic sensor IC with a built-in CMOS driver. The XC3202B is ideally suited for battery portable applications such as mobile phones, electronic dictionaries and handheld game consoles thanks to:

  • A low current consumption of 8μA (this value and all values that follow are typical values) with VDD=3V;
  • Small packages, in particular the QFN-0601 package (under development) whose dimensions are 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.6mm - the other package is SOT-23D.
Coming back to the first point above, 8μA is an average current consumption that results from the way the XC3202B operates (please refer as well to the below waveform):
  • Once every 75ms (t_period), in order to carry out a measurement, the supply current of the XC3202B increases to 3mA -IDD(en)- for a duration of 75μs (t_awake);
  • The rest of the time, the sensing circuits of the Hall plates and the latch circuitry are turned off in order to bring the supply current down to 5μA -IDD(dis).
The XC3202B takes advantage of the Hall effect to translate the magnetic field detected by its sensors into a voltage that can be used to control the two integrated FET's at its output side. Being an omnipolar Hall effect IC, the XC3202B doesn't really differentiate between North Pole and South Pole magnetic fluxes and, so, its output becomes "low" whenever the magnetism of one of these two poles becomes strong enough. Moreover, the XC3202B includes hysteresis circuitry. In practice, combining the previous 3 statements means that the XC3202B output:
  • Remains a High output voltage until the magnetic flux density becomes more negative than -3mT or more positive than +3mT;
  • Transitions from a High output voltage to a Low output voltage when the magnetic flux density becomes more negative than -3mT ("strong" North Pole magnetic flux) or becomes more positive than +3mT ("strong" South Pole magnetic flux);
  • Transitions from a Low output voltage to a High output voltage when the magnetic flux density becomes less negative than -2mT ("weak" North Pole magnetic flux) or becomes less positive than +2mT ("weak" South Pole magnetic flux).
