­Murata Achieves Highest Rating in CDP 2023 Climate Change List

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has recognized Murata Manufacturing by including them in the prestigious 2023 climate change A List.

Once more, Murata has been recognized with the highest distinction, acknowledging the company’s commitment to the environment stewardship and innovation, after having first earned this recognition in 2021.

Murata’s Climate Change Initiatives

Murata is dedicated to minimizing the environmental burden of its manufacturing activities, placing significant emphasis on combating climate change. Seeking to promote the use of renewable energy and sustainable business, Murata is a member of both RE100, an international initiative which aims to switch the power used in business activities to 100% renewable energy, and Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP). By leveraging external knowledge, the membership assists Murata in accelerating decarbonization efforts as well as allowing them to help provide suggestions to the Japanese government through JCLP.

As part of this commitment, Murata has set the goals of using 50% renewable energy for business purposes by 2030, and 100% by 2050. In 2021, when Murata was first acknowledged by the CDP, the Kanazu Murata Manufacturing plant achieved 100% renewable electricity for business activities using Murata technology.

Since then, the system presently employed by Kanazu Murata Manufacturing has been implemented across four additional plants, namely Sendai Murata, Ise Murata Manufacturing, Hakui Murata Manufacturing, and Wakura Murata Manufacturing. Consequently, the power generation facilities at these four plants will collectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 1,897 t-CO2 annually. Furthermore, the Philippine production site has become Murata’s first overseas site to use 100% renewable energy, through the utilization of a mega solar system and a power menu based on geothermal power generation.

Construction of the Murata Group’s first multistory parking garage with a green design at Wuxi Murata Electronics has also been completed. The use of double-sided solar panels and the installation of solar panels on the walls of this parking garage increased the solar energy to ground surface area absorption rate by 1.2 times. This allows for the generation of power equivalent to the annual energy consumption of at least 300 average households and a 490 t-CO2 reduction in CO2 emissions.Following the peak of total GHG emissions in fiscal 2018, there has been a subsequent decrease, with a recorded value of 1.34 million t-CO2e for fiscal 2022. Going forward, Murata will continue making efforts to achieve its emissions targets of 870,000 tons for fiscal 2030.
