Murata Electronics announced the development of the world’s first multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) with a capacitance value of 1.0µF in the 01005 inch size. Measuring just 0.4 × 0.2mm, the GRM022R60G105M has a rated voltage of 4Vdc. Mass production of its 6.3Vdc counterpart, the GRM022R60J105M, will begin in 2021. Both are intended for use in an extensive range of mobile electronic devices, such as smartphones.
The growth of the 5G smartphone market coupled with the need for increased functionality and miniaturization has driven the demand for higher density electronic circuitry. MLCCs are essential building blocks, with approximately 900 to 1,100 of the components installed in a single high-end smartphone. Murata leveraged its proprietary thin layer ceramic elements and thin-sheet formation technologies to achieve a 35 percent footprint reduction and 50 percent decrease in volume ratio when compared to previous products with the same capacitance value. The GRM022R60G105 also delivers capacity more than twice that of similarly sized conventional solutions.
