Caltech’s Resnick Sustainability Institute has announced that nominations are open for the 2015 Resonate Awards. The awards are designed to bring attention to unheralded innovators with provocative ideas that contribute to long term sustainability. These include meeting the world’s energy needs sustainably, providing water and food for a growing world population, cleaning the environment, improving people’s access to the natural resources they need to live a productive life, and many others.

“The ideas that will transform the world will come from innovators who challenge conventional wisdom and are willing to think about problems in completely new ways,” said Dr. Harry Atwater, Director of the Resnick Sustainability Institute and Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics at Caltech. “We are looking for nominations from all over the world and from the best scientists and engineers, policy thinkers, financiers, artists, companies, and sources we may not have even considered before.”

The 2015 Resonate Award nominations will be open through early Fall. After that, the entrants will be judged by an advisory panel of varied experts and visionaries with the experience to offer insights about how ideas may have important, long term impact.

In 2014, Resonate winners included innovators in several key areas: breakthroughs for energy storage, funding of transformative sustainability ideas, new ways to solve the very complex problems of the smart grid, and the development of new chemical processes that could fundamentally change the economics of alternative energy. The winners were presented in May at the FORTUNE Brainstorm Green Conference.

“The breadth and depth of the inaugural Resonate Winners has underscored the plethora of important ideas that often don’t get the attention they deserve. We hope to see this award become a way to encourage even more provocative ideas,” said Dr. Atwater.

About The Resnick Sustainability Institute
The Resnick Sustainability Institute is the Caltech’s studio focused on those breakthroughs that can positively alter the sustainability of our world. It marries bold creativity and deep scientific knowledge to encourage orthogonal thinking and original ideas. The Institute works with some of the world’s top and emerging scientists – both at Caltech and beyond. Current projects include research into energy generation –- such as advanced photovoltaics, photoelectrochemical solar fuels, and cellulosic biofuels; energy conversion work on batteries and fuel cells; and energy efficiency and management such as fuel efficient vehicles, green chemical synthesis, thermoelectric materials, and advanced research on electrical grid control and distribution.
