ABB, the wind industry's leading power technology solutions provider, today announced its full support for the emerging offshore wind market in North America at this week's AWEA Offshore Windpower Expo, held this week at the Baltimore Convention Center. ABB is demonstrating several of its major technological breakthroughs at this week's event, held October 11-13. These technologies include ABB's subsea high voltage AC (HVAC) and DC (HVDC and HVDC Light®) cables and transmission systems specifically designed for undersea lines; ABB's offshore and onshore substations; and efficient low- and medium-voltage products and technologies for offshore wind turbines. Several subsea cable samples will be available at the ABB booth (#318). During the event, ABB's Kristian Bergman, Business Development Manager, Cables, will speak to conference attendees with a special presentation on, "An Overview of AC and DC Export Cable Systems for Offshore Wind Facilities." Bergman's presentation will discuss ways of connecting large offshore wind farms to the onshore grid using high voltage AC and DC export cable technologies. Billion Dollar Deal in Europe ABB recently won an order of approximately $1 billion from the Dutch-German transmission operator TenneT to supply a power link connecting the offshore North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid using HVDC Light transmission technologies. It will deploy the world's largest offshore HVDC system with a rating over 900 megawatts (MW), keeping electrical losses to less than one percent per converter station. The completed link will be capable of supplying more than 1.5 million households with clean wind-generated electricity. This is one of many offshore wind projects ABB is involved with worldwide, and one that many experts believe is coming soon to North America. "We are excited to participate in the AWEA Offshore Wind Expo as we continue to introduce ourselves as an experienced global technology solutions provider for both offshore and onshore wind power," said Dennis McKinley, director of wind power solutions in North America for ABB. "The offshore wind industry today, already flourishing in Europe and Asia, is mature and growing, and provides a clear roadmap of what is probably inevitable here in the United States and North America." ABB provides wind power technology solutions for everything from electrical design to substation construction up to project management, installation and commissioning. ABB's comprehensive product portfolio includes generators, low-voltage and medium-voltage converters, breakers, transformers, switchgear, low-voltage products and cables. www.abb.com
