AVX Corporation is a leading international supplier of electronic passive components and interconnect solutions with 24 manufacturing and customer support facilities in 15 countries around the world. The company offers a broad range of devices including capacitors, resistors, filters, timing and circuit protection devices and connectors. Automotive, industrial and commercial markets served by ZIF vertical secure lock FFC/FPC connector series AVX introduced two new families of zero insertion force, vertical mount, secure locking FFC/FPC connectors targeting automotive, industrial and commercial markets. Specifically designed to meet the high volume, harsh environment needs of the automotive market, Series 6801 connectors feature a one-stage action which - for the first time - facilitates automated assembly. Retention force is high at 70N and optional shortened contacts allow for automated electrical testing. Because the new styles accomodate the same FFC/FPC cable shape as previous generation products, upgrade is simple and designs can be flexible using right angled and vertical versions. The 0.5mm pitch devices can handle a FPC/FFC thickness of 0.30mm +/- 0.05mm and are rated at 0.5A/pin, 50Vrms. Operating temperature range is the automotive standard from -40 to +105degC, higher than standard connectors of this type. To further aid automation, Series 6801 connectors have a sufficiently-large flat surface to accommodate pick & place nozzle heads and clear, contrasting colouring for camera-recognition (black on slider /white on housing). Targeting more commercially-sensitive, yet high performance applications, Series 6251 zero insertion force, secure locking FFC/FPC connectors are also configured for vertical mount, and again accommodate the same FFC/FPC cable shape as previous devices providing great design flexibility. Featuring a flip lid which is moulded to simplify opening and closing by hand and to provide tactile feedback on closing, the connectors are available in 10/30/40/45/50/60/64 way versions and offered with gold plating as standard for maximum protection against tin whiskering. Comments Andy Kotas, Marketing Manager, Connectors, AVX/Kyocera Electronic Devices: "The interconnect system is one of the most vulnerable yet vital parts of automotive and any other electronic system, so spending the time to select the best performing and most suitable connector for modern production processes is essential."

Discrete wire-to-board ‘poke-home' connectors from AVX are ‘termination-friendly' AVX introduced its new 9276 series discrete wire-to-board ‘poke-home‘ connector, simplifying installation and providing a quick and reliable termination in a sleek 2.5mm pitch SMT package. Suitable for a broad range of industrial and commercial markets, users simply strip the wires and insert them into the connector. AVX provides a small insertion / extraction tool which will allow the wires to easily be replaced up to five times. Developed for harsh industrial and Solid State Lighting (SSL) applications, the connector has been designed using a high spring force Beryllium Copper upper spring contact which accepts a wide range (18-24 AWG solid or stranded) of wire to meet multiple applications within a single connector. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 position devices are available. By utlilizing a dual contact design 9276 series connectors offer a higher current rating of up to 6A than competing products while minimizing PCB space. For example, the four position connector has a footprint of 90mm² while competing products require 160mm². The dual-contact design also provides two solder points for each wire eliminating the need for external anchor tabs. Comments product manager Tom Anderson: "Many products on the market today include a small number of discrete wires which connect components to a board. Our 9276 series ‘poke-home‘ connectors make this process simple, quick and reliable - which makes the device very termination-friendly within the factory as well as in the field with electrical installers." Typical applications include: connecting discrete wired components such as fans, motors, switches, LEDs, sensors and drives directly to a PCB; bringing power, ground and signals onto a PCB; and daisy-chaining PCB's together to create a continuous string of boards.

Stacked MLCC family include high capacitance, low ESR versions for applications requiring board stress relief AVX expanded its stacked, surface mount multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) product offering to include the highest capacitance for a given MLCC package. Designated RH Series, the range features 50V and 100V devices with maximum capacitance values of 33uF and 22uF respectively. The advanced capacitor series provides excellent over voltage protection, improves ripple current capability and VC performance compared to other high capacitance MLCCs, while offering low ESR. Featuring a stress relieving lead frame, the RH Series is ideal for any application requiring board stress relief. Suitable for military and aerospace applications, the RH Series can be used as an input and output filter capacitor in high frequency DC-DC converter applications above 10W, where high volume and low cost is required. "As a leader in MLCC technology, AVX has developed an advanced solution that provides at least two times the capacitance in a given package compared to other SMPS capacitor products," said Connie Houghtaling, product manager at AVX. "In addition, the RH Series provides volume and weight reduction compared to the currently available products." The RH Series is available in RoHS and non-RoHS versions, and come in tape and reel packaging or waffle trays and has a typical lead time of 12 weeks.

Transguard® circuit protection product offering to include controlled capacitance multilayer varistors AVX has developed the Controlled Capacitance Multilayer Varistor (MLV) Series specifically for mixed signal environments. Designed to satisfy the unique challenges of the automotive market, the Controlled Capacitance MLV delivers targeted signal filtering across a 20db range. The advanced MLV also reduces emissions from high-speed ASICs and prevents conduction of induced E-fields into the IC and clamps transient voltages. In addition, the Controlled Capacitance MLV provides bi-directional protection, excellent energy/current handling capability, and low leakage at a rated voltage of 10uA. "AVX's Controlled Capacitance Multilayer Varistor Series provides tighter capacitance and tolerance control versus the competition. This MLV Series also offers lower leakage current at rated voltages. We plan to further expand the TransGuard® product family to include Controlled Capacitance MLV E6 capacitance range versions, making it the most extensive offering available," said Jim Wright, protection product manager at AVX. The Controlled Capacitance MLV Series is ideal for multiplex bus systems, bus drivers and data over power line filtering applications. Typical pricing for the Controlled Capacitance Multilayer Varistor Series ranges from $0.034 to $0.105 depending on volume, with a lead time of stock to 12 weeks.

Low profile Pulsecap™ tantalum capacitor range up to3300μF AVX announces the extension of its industry-proven, low profile, high capacitance PulseCap™ tantalum capacitor series to include a 3300μF/ 4V rated device with a low ESR of 55m?. PulseCap™ is designed for applications such as PCMCIA/USB wireless express cards where bulk capacitance is needed to boost transmitter power and power back-up capacitor in Solid State Drives. The latest addition completes the family of 2mm low profile large case size. Moreover, the ‘undertab' termination style — where traditional ‘J' leads are replaced by terminations that do not protrude outside of the outline of the case — increases volumetric efficiency and allows parts to be positioned very closely together, delivering significant space savings. The offering also includes capacitors up to 10V rated voltage. The 2200/1500μF / 6.3V PulseCap™ capacitors are available in two different case sizes 4 (7.3 x 6.3 x 2.0mm) and 6 (14.5 x 7.5 x 2.0mm). The next PulseCap™ option in development uses a conductive polymer as a second electrode, featuring very safe, reduced-ignition failure mode and even lower ESR. Therefore the capacitors are very robust against overloading and thermal runaway. First samples will be available during the first half of the 2011. PulseCap™ devices are RoHS compliant and capable of withstanding a soldering profile of 3x reflow at 260degC. Operating temperature range is -55 to +125degC. Other applications include wireless data cards, solid state drivers, smart metering and sensors. These new PulseCap™ capacitors complement AVX‘s BestCap® low ESR devices. In contrast to other large case size, large capacitance devices, PulseCaps are true surface mount devices capable of withstanding lead-free reflow process assembly. They also save more space on a PCB and offer excellent surge robustness.

New TRM series professional multi-anode capacitor AVX released a TRM series of SMD tantalum professional multi-anode capacitors with ultra-low ESR and high reliability levels, with failure rates of better than 0.5%/1000 hours at 85degC and full rated voltage. The new TRM series is based on AVX's wide experience with tantalum capacitor technology and provides class-leading robustness and reliability in combination with an ultra-low ESR multi-anode concept. This new TRM series of SMD multi-anode capacitors is designed for high-end commercial applications with long lifetime expectancy devices. AVX's TRM series capacitors can withstand greater thermo mechanical stress and suit harsh environments due to the company's advanced manufacturing techniques and process improvements. The new series employs established TPM multi-anode technology and experience from the popular TRJ professional series, resulting in double the reliability and reduced DC leakage current compared to conventional commercial capacitors. In addition, very low ESR is achieved thanks to the multi-anode construction, which provides larger surge current capability and high ripple currents within the same case size. Temperature cycling, double burn-in time (ageing) and exception limit controls in place ensure superior quality and enhanced reliability levels within the commercial product portfolio. Target applications include non-life support medical equipment, avionics and safety products, long-life telecommunication devices and automotive components.

New FFLI film capacitor designed for DC filtering AVX launched its FFLI power film capacitor series, specifically targeting DC filtering. One major advantage of the technology is that unlike aluminium electrolytic devices where there is a high risk of the case exploding at the end of the capacitor's life, the FFLI Series devices simply experience a reduction in capacitance of about 5% upon reaching end-of-life. With an expected life of 100,000 hours, FFLI series devices are qualified to IEC 61071 for power electronic capacitors. They also meet the environmental testing requirements of IEC 60068-1 and pass IEC 61373 shocks and vibration tests. Devices feature a CV rating of up to 3000?F and 1900Vdc/100Arms, and can operate in temperatures of up to 95degC. Explains product manager, Gilles Terzulli: "These new film metalized products are especially suitable for use in modular banks of capacitors for applications such as solar panel installations or wind turbine energy generators."
