AVX, a leading manufacturer of passive components and interconnect solutions, has introduced a unique new surface-mount, single-poke, dual-beam boxed contact system designed to enable simple, reliable, and solderless wire termination in industrial and solid-state lighting applications. The novel, single-position, 9296 Series contact integrates several key features within the stamping to facilitate SMT pickup, wire guidance, high force retention, and easy wire removal, effectively providing all of the benefits of a full-function connector in an insulator-free solution, mitigating both labor and materials costs, as well as contributing to smaller and more cost-effective end-designs. "There is a continual demand for smaller and more cost-effective components in the industrial and solid-state lighting markets," said Tom Anderson, product manager at AVX, "and the 9296 Series contact system is just one of several new components we've designed to provide design engineers with the increased functionality and decreased size and cost they're looking for without jeopardizing the high-quality performance that our parts are known for." AVX's 9296 Series single-poke, dual-beam boxed contact system enables single-contact placement, significantly expanding design functionality in a host of ruggedized wire-to-board applications. Featuring an enhanced solder pad for maximum mechanical stability on the PCB and a unique closed-box design that captures wires from all sides, providing outstanding wire retention, 9296 Series contacts are capable of accepting 12-20AWG solid and stranded wires and are rated for 10-20A depending on AWG. Voltage rating for the series is dependent upon placement distance. Enabling simple, reliable, and solderless wire termination, the 9296 Series contact also features upper and lower tines that guide stripped wires down its center, deflecting the right and left contact tines until the wire reaches the wire stop. Wires may be removed by simply twisting them out or by using a small blade removal tool to help release some of the contact force. Tape and reel packaged for automated SMT placement, AVX's new 9296 Series tin-over-nickel-plated copper alloy contacts are RoHS compliant, feature five-cycle durability, and are rated for use in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +125°C.
