BMF055 compact 9-axis motion sensor

Bosch Sensortec launched the BMF055, a compact 9-axis motion sensor that is easy to program for a particular application. The BMF055 is well suited to the needs of customers developing advanced application-specific sensor fusion algorithms, adding sophisticated motion sensing capabilities, and replacing multiple discrete components with a single package. Target market segments include robotics, gaming, remote controls, navigation systems, drones, and human interface devices for Internet of Things (IoT) projects.

“The BMF055 sensor from the ASSN family is ideal for applications such as robotics, drones, gaming and navigation systems, which need a customized system-in-package solution,” said Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO and General Manager, Bosch Sensortec. “By providing a comprehensive software development package, we are enabling our customers to create highly-customized sensor systems that meet their exact application requirements.”

The new sensor from Bosch Sensortec’s Application-Specific Sensor Node (ASSN) family combines an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer with a Cortex M0+ processor from Atmel’s SAMD20 microcontroller family. In a compact single 5.2 x 3.8 x 1.1 mm3 package, it provides this high level functionality in a ‘one stop shop’ solution, making integration easier for the customers.

With the BMF055, Bosch Sensortec provides a Software Development Package that includes a precompiled BSX Lite fusion library with integration guidelines, API source files for individual sensors and example projects as a plugin for Atmel Studio. The Atmel toolchain can be downloaded from Atmel’s website. This software development package will enable customers to easily develop their own application-specific firmware for the BMF055 sensor without requiring an additional application processor.
