DC/DC converter series from CUI powers IGBT gate drivers

    06/12/2013

CUI has launched a line of board-mount DC/DC converters for IGBT gate drivers. Devices in the VQA series provide short circuit protection with 3000 Vac input to output isolation (4242 Vdc), and are ideally suited to provide a fully isolated gate drive for both industrial and clean energy applications, such as wind turbines and solar panels. The VQA series of converters operates efficiently at high frequencies (approx. 20 kHz) over an industrial operating temperature range of -40~85°C and come in a compact, internally-potted 8-pin SIP case measuring 19.5 x 9.8 x 12.5 mm. Of particular relevance to IGBT gate drivers is the VQA series' ability to isolate and convert power from the main dc bus voltage, making them ideal for IGBT gate drivers that do not contain a built in power supply. In high side gate drivers, the VQA series' isolation functionality addresses the problems associated with a constantly changing emitter potential. And, in low side IGBT gate drivers, it eliminates potential ground loop noise problems. Typical applications incorporating IGBT gate drivers that require an isolated dc-dc converter include photovoltaic panels, solar inverters, servo systems, and pump controllers. The VQA series is rated up to 2 W and provides nominal inputs of 12, 15, and 24 Vdc. Dual independent outputs of 15/-8, 15/-8.7, and 17/-8.6 Vdc are available. Prices start at $6.87 per unit for 500 units. CUI
