Energy Institute releases guidance on effective engagement between power generators and contractors
With extensive and frequent use of contractors and sub-contractors in power generation, it is clear that effective leadership and communications can play a key role in improving safety. The Energy Institute (EI)’s Power Utilities Technical Committee (PUTC) has released its latest guidance, entitled Engaging contractors: Partnership approaches to improving safety in the power industry, providing good practice on managing effective engagement with contractors.
This new technical guidance draws on shared experience within the sector and offers an insight into specific strategies employed by industry practitioners. Summarising and applying some of the key elements of the EI’s Managing contractors: A guide for the energy industry (released in 2006), this new publication illustrates, with case examples, a number of key risk areas for generators and contractors, and how these risks have been effectively managed.
Speaking on the release of the document, Daniel Rawdin, Process Support Engineer – Thermal Generation, SSE, and PUTC Chair, says, ‘By recognising the importance of working collaboratively with all stakeholders across the industry, we hope this document will enable both power generation companies and contractors to effectively manage their working relationships and have a positive impact on safety for all involved.’
This latest guidance focuses on power station outages and the associated contract works. It has been compiled by global management consultancy, Oliver Wyman, through collaboration between a number of stakeholders within the sector, and draws on examples of effective partnership approaches to improving safety.
