    FCL Components Releases FTR-L1 Latching Relay Series for AI Servers

    ­FCL Components America, Inc., has released FTR-L1 and FTR-L1R, a small-body, high-current relay series designed for AI server Power Supply Units (PSUs) with built-in Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).

    The FTR-L1 (25A, 277VAC) and the FTR-L1R (40A, 277VAC) are 2-coil latching relays, so there is no need to waste power on coil consumption. A 1a+1b contact configuration makes the series suitable for switching the AC power source, and the relays offer a high dielectric strength of 2,500VAC between open contacts.
    The FTR-L1 series features a wide 4.5mm contact gap, making it capable of supporting operation in environments at altitudes up to 5000m. The series is in compliance with product safety standard IEC 62368-1:2023.

    The Role of Relays in AI Systems
    In AI systems, the PSU plays a critical role in delivering stable and sufficient power to high-performance components like Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and AI accelerators. These components require much more power than in regular computers, so AI servers often use high-wattage, redundant PSUs to ensure reliability and avoid downtime.

    In PSUs, the FTR-L1 relay series’ role is to automatically transfer to a secondary AC power source in an emergency. An ATS is an essential feature for customers requiring high availability and continuous performance.

    Design for Purpose
    The series features a slim, low-profile design measuring 50 × 20 × 27mm, making it suitable for the compact, space-saving installation requirements of PSU enclosures in compliance with the Open Rack V3 (ORv3) specification. The FTR-L1 supports the AC input current requirements of 3 kW-class ORv3 PSUs, while the FTR-L1R is designed for 5.5 kW-class ORv3 High Power Rack (HPR) PSUs.

    The FTR-L1 series has already attracted interest from multiple power supply manufacturers, and orders for mass-production units are currently being accepted. FCL Components is also developing higher-capacity models for next-generation ORv3 HPR2 PSUs.
