GE Vernova announced it has been officially chosen by PowerGrid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to deliver a critical 6 GW High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission corridor. The project was booked in the fourth quarter of 2026.
This project will serve as a vital energy highway, enabling the efficient transport of 6 GW of power from the renewable energy-rich region of Barmer, Rajasthan, to the load center in South Kalamb.
By connecting remote renewable energy zones to the national network, this 800 kV project aims to provide the infrastructure needed to stabilize power flow for millions of homes and businesses. As India’s electricity demand continues to grow, this high-capacity link is essential to ensuring that the country’s grid remains reliable and resilient while supporting its decarbonization goals.
“India is at the forefront of the global energy transition, characterized by an unprecedented scale of renewable integration and rapidly evolving grid requirements,” said Philippe Piron, President and CEO of GE Vernova’s Electrification Segment. “This project represents more than just transmission capacity; it is an investment in the reliability and future-proofing of India’s power system. We are proud to work with PGCIL to deploy the advanced technology required to bridge the gap between renewable energy production and national consumption, ensuring long-term system performance.”
"As India accelerates its renewable energy journey, the development of robust, high-capacity transmission infrastructure is paramount,” said Sandeep Zanzaria, CEO & Managing Director at GE Vernova, T&D India. “The Barmer–South Kalamb HVDC corridor is a strategic project for PGCIL, designed to efficiently integrate large-scale renewable capacity from Rajasthan into the national grid. By leveraging advanced transmission technologies, we are strengthening the backbone of India’s power system, ensuring reliable, high-quality electricity reaches consumers across the country while supporting our national commitment to a sustainable and resilient energy future."
GE Vernova will deliver the complete design for the ±800 kV, 6,000 MW (2x3000 MW) bipolar HVDC link between Barmer II and South Kalamb. The project scope encompasses the creation of new converter stations, the supply of all major equipment, and the full management of site erection, testing, and commissioning.By overseeing the end-to-end delivery of this link, GE Vernova ensures a synchronized approach that prioritizes grid stability and system efficiency, suitable for large scale renewable energy links such as Barmer.
The project will featureGE Vernova’s most advanced LCC (Line Commutated Converter) valve, which will be manufactured at the Pallavaram factory in India. It will also include theeLumina™ control system which provides the digital intelligence required to manage complex power flows, enabling the grid to respond dynamically to changing conditions.
This collaboration further strengthens GE Vernova’s long-standing relationship with PGCIL, reinforcing a shared vision of a modernized, resilient, and decarbonized power grid for the future.
