The HPC12 from Stackpole is a high power handling SMD resistive device. It is rated for 5 watts of power in free air, but can handle 12 watts continuously with 400 LFM air movement on standard recommended solder pads with no heat sink needed. The unique housing for the HPC12 provides outstanding heat transfer to the ambient air from the thick film element. The terminals are attached with high temperature solder and can withstand a full minute in a 300C bath with no degradation. In addition, the HPC12 can withstand surges of over 2000 watts for pulse durations of less than 10 microseconds. Stackpole's Director of Marketing, Kory Schroeder states, "the HPC series offers a higher power rating than previously thought possible in an SMD device. It can be used with or without air movement and forces much less heat into the PCB compared to other power resistors of this size." The HPC12 is a good choice for a wide variety of industrial and commercial power supply applications, motor controls, aircraft and aerospace, remote telecom and datacom power systems, test systems for power controls and power IC's, petroleum exploration equipment, and mining equipment, medical grade monitors, remote sensing, and wind measurement systems. The HPC12 is available in tape and reel packaging in 200 pcs quantities. Pricing varies with tolerance and resistance value and ranges from $1.20 to $1.75 each in minimum quantities.
