LGA-packaged MOSFETs aid efficiency and battery life in space-limited smartphones and tablets

    06/13/2013

ON Semiconductor, driving innovation in energy efficiency, has introduced two MOSFET devices designed for use in smartphone and tablet PC applications where they provide a crucial part of the Lithium ion (Li-ion) battery charging / discharging protection circuit switching. The EFC6601R and EFC6602R help designers to reduce solution size, improve efficiency and maximize battery life. Suitable for single or dual Li-ion cell implementations, the new RoHS compliant devices offer industry-leading levels of RDS (on) performance and employ a Land Grid Array (LGA) structure to give them a small, low-profile design that makes them ideal for the limited space environment typical of smart phone and tablet PC applications. The EFC6601R has a specified maximum VSSS (Source to Source Voltage) of 24 volt (V), and the EFC6602R has a specified maximum VSSS of 12 V. Both devices operate from a 2.5 V supply, have a common-drain structure, and a built-in protection diode. "Since the introduction of lithium ion batteries ON Semiconductor has been developing and supplying charging/discharging protection circuit switching MOSFETs," said Takashi Akiba, general manager of MOS products for ON Semiconductor's SANYO Semiconductor Products Group. "Our accumulated knowledge and expertise has enabled us to create these highly miniaturized devices that further help extend the battery life and enhance efficiency." ON Semiconductor plans to add five further devices to the EFC MOSFET family within the year that will help designers of an even wider range of mobile devices achieve their application objectives for reducing solution size and extending battery life. Packaging and Pricing The EFC6601R and EFC6602R are offered in halogen-free EFCP packages and are $0.80 and $1.00 in 5,000 unit quantities. ON Semiconductor
