Lhyfe Becomes Green Hydrogen Supplier to BMW Group's Steyr R&D Centre to Power Fuel Cells for Hydrogen Engines

Lhyfe – one of the world's pioneers in the production of green and renewable hydrogen for the decarbonisation of industry and mobility –announced a cooperation with BMW Group to supply green hydrogen to the Steyr site in Austria.

Supplying a strategic site for BMW Group’s hydrogen technology
The BMW Group site in Steyr, Austria, is getting ready to mass produce fuel cell systems for the new BMW X5 model. BMW Group’s third-generation hydrogen propulsion system will be produced there from 2028. Previous development stages and prototype generations of the third-generation hydrogen system were developed in Munich. This advance technology paves the way for a more compact, more powerful and more efficient system, increasing range and power while reducing the vehicle's energy consumption.

The green hydrogen supplied by Lhyfe will be used for series development, industrialisation, testing and validation activities at the Steyr site.

At a time when low-carbon mobility solutions are diversifying, hydrogen has confirmed its relevance as a complement to electric batteries, particularly for intensive use, for vehicles that demand long range and fast recharging times (SUVs, taxis, vans, forklift trucks, lorries, etc.), or in geographical areas where the electricity grid cannot support mass electrification of the vehicle fleet. The development of these technologies by major industrial players such as BMW Group is a sign that this sector is gradually structuring in Europe.

Lhyfe: recognised industrial and logistics expertise
BMW Group chose Lhyfe as its supplier based on its combined experience in the production and logistics of renewable hydrogen.
As a producer and supplier of green hydrogen in Europe since 2021, Lhyfe has one of the largest bulk hydrogen transportation fleets in the European Union. In 2025, the company made more than 850 deliveries throughout Europe. It has installed four production sites in France and Germany – with a total production capacity of up to 8.5 tonnes of green hydrogen per day – and plans to commission two additional sites in France by the end of the year.

All operating sites are RFNBO-certified, guaranteeing that their hydrogen complies with European requirements for renewable energy.

Thanks to its infrastructure, logistical strength and partnerships, Lhyfe is able to deliver green and RFNBO hydrogen throughout Europe.

Its deliveries to BMW Group will be its first in Austria.
