Michigan Chemistry Council and NextEnergy to co-sponsor advanced battery conference

The Michigan Chemistry Council (MCC) and NextEnergy will co-sponsor the Advanced Battery Opportunities for Chemical Manufacturers and Suppliers conference on March 21, 2013 in the Mackinac Room at the Anderson House Office Building in Lansing, Michigan to review opportunities in the domestic advanced battery field for chemical manufacturers and suppliers in Michigan. In the Fall of 2012, NextEnergy wrapped up phase one of an extensive study on the lithium ion battery cell supply chain, which was focused on select components used in battery cell manufacturing. Supported by the Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the analysis identified significant gaps and opportunities for domestic materials and components manufacturers. The study also uncovered that many of the experienced incumbent suppliers of materials, components and equipment are overseas firms - and most of those suppliers have yet to make a commitment to domestic production. The expectation of battery demand growth for vehicles and grid storage applications is likely to stimulate investments to shorten supply chains for U.S. battery manufacturers and create jobs for in the state of Michigan and region. "This program will provide a unique forum for Michigan chemical manufacturers and suppliers to learn about opportunities in the emerging field of advance battery manufacturing," noted Cynthia Schulz, CEO of the Michigan Chemistry Council. "I believe our member companies have core competencies that can capitalize on these opportunities." The program will include a keynote address from Dr. Peter Faguy, Electrochemist, Energy Storage at U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and participation from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and other stakeholders including representatives from Dow Kokam, Navitas Systems, BASF, Dow Chemical, SoulBrain MI, TODA America, XG Sciences and more. "We are pleased to partner with the Michigan Chemistry Council as part of our ongoing efforts to bring new business opportunities to Michigan," commented Dan Radomski, Vice President of New Market Services for NextEnergy. "This program is a 'must attend' for any company that wants a view into the future of manufacturing opportunities in the advanced energy market space." NextEnergy
