Microchip’s RN4020 Bluetooth low-energy Smart Module now at Mouser

    11/03/2014

Mouser Electronics is now stocking the RN4020 Bluetooth Low- Energy Module from Microchip. Building on Microchip’s deep Bluetooth (BT) Classic experience, the RN4020 module carries both worldwide regulatory certifications and is Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) certified. This full-featured, Bluetooth 4.1 compliant smart module comes equipped with an integrated Bluetooth Low-Energy (BTLE) stack, onboard support for common SIG low-energy profiles, and is pre-loaded with the Microchip Low-energy Data Profile (MLDP). The MLDP functionality enables designers to easily stream any type of data across the BTLE link.

The Microchip RN4020 Bluetooth Low-Energy Module, available from Mouser Electronics, is a complete stack-on-board module. The device can connect to any microcontroller using a UART command interface, and it can also operate as a stand-alone device. The RN4020 smart module includes a Bluetooth Low-Energy (BTLE) stack, a built-in PCB antenna, and all standard BT SIG profiles, including Microchip’s Low-energy Data Profile (MLDP). All of the programmable profiles are stored and selectable on the module, and even private services can be created. Having the RN4020 integrated with the BTLE stack and onboard SIG and MLDP profiles not only speeds time to market, but also aids designers in ensuring Bluetooth compatibility.

Transmit power for the smart module is rated at 7.0 dBm (typical), and the RX sensitivity is rated at -92.5 dBm. By combining the RF, baseband controller and command API processor, the RN4020 is truly a fully-integrated Bluetooth Low-Energy Solution.

This complete module includes all of the hardware, software and certifications needed to easily add Bluetooth connectivity to any wireless or Internet of Things (IoT) design. Applications for the RN4020 include Smart Energy/Smart Home appliances and automation; health and medical devices; toys, tags, fobs and remote controls; pulse and proximity sensor-based systems; industrial control; and wearable smart devices and accessories.

The flexible RN4020 Bluetooth Low-Energy PICtail™/PICtail Plus daughter board enables code development using a USB interface to any PC, and over the onboard In-Circuit Serial Programming™ interface for Microchip’s PICkit™ or MPLAB® ICE™ tools. The board is compatible with existing Microchip development boards with a PICtail interface.
