Monolithic Power Systems, a leading fabless manufacturer of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announces a set of new power-density records with the MP2130. The MP2130 is a 3.5A, 6V, fully-integrated, synchronous, switch-mode, step-down converter in an ultra-small 2×2mm QFN package. The MP2130 is ideal for converting power from a 2.7V to 6V input range to a 0.6V to 5.5V output range, with a load current of up to 3.5A. This product targets a wide range of applications, including storage (SSDs/HDDs) systems, networking cards, portable/handheld devices, battery-operated devices, and point-of-load power supplies. The MP2130 features an adaptive constant on-time (COT) control method that eliminates complicated loop compensation and simplifies designs. MPS's proprietary COT control provides the industry's best transient response performance and has enabled MPS to compete and secure design wins in applications with very wide dynamic load changes. A fast transient response not only reduces the need for bulk capacitance, but also increases flexibility in output-capacitor selection. Another benefit of the COT control method is the seamless transition from a full-load to light-load and its high light-load efficiency. Furthermore, the MP2130 integrates very low Rds(on) (50m?/40m?) power FETs and is designed using MPS's proprietary switching-loss reduction technique to provide an impressive 96% peak efficiency and 85% light-load efficiency at 5V input and 3.3V output. This kind of performance efficiency benefits many systems with stringent full-load and standby power requirements. This product also comes with a power-good indicator for output-voltage monitoring and easing power sequencing. Other protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit, hiccup-mode short circuit, and thermal shutdown. "The outstanding performance and extremely small footprint of this device are what makes the MP2130 a winning product for our major customers. Therefore, MPS will be offering a family of products with similar performance, but different current ranges, and package options," said Katherine Hoang, product marketing manager at Monolithic Power Systems (MPS). The MP2130 is available in volume from MPS and its distributors. Retail price for 1000 pieces is $2.65 each. www.monolithicpower.com
