Mouser congratulates innovators in “Create the Future” design contest

    10/15/2014

Mouser Electronics, a leading engineering resource and global distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, applauds the winners of the 2014 Create the Future Design Contest. The grand prize winning design is a 3D printer capable of building a house within a day.

Mouser is a major sponsor of the 12th annual NASA Tech Briefs magazine “Create the Future” Design Contest, a global challenge to engineers and students to create the next great thing. Mouser was joined in the 2014 sponsorship by its valued partners Analog Devices and Intel. The winners will be recognized at an awards dinner on November 7 in New York City.

The contest attracted more than 1,000 innovative ideas from engineers and students in 61 countries. The winner of the $20,000 grand prize is Contour Crafting, a computerized construction method that rapidly 3D prints large-scale structures directly from architectural CAD models.

Behrokh Khoshnevis, a professor at University of Southern California, who invented Contour Crafting, views this invention as a proven concept. “Bringing 3D printing to construction is bringing a concept to a proven application. For many years, building has been done in layers – concrete foundation blocks, brick laying, structural framing, etc.” “I am very happy to receive this award and find it to be very timely as I am in the process of fund raising and I think this recognition will help me greatly in furthering the project,” Khoshnevis said.

"We congratulate this year's winners for their ingenuity, and commend all of the entrants for taking part in this exciting program that fosters technological innovation,” said Kevin Hess, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Mouser Electronics. “As a distributor of leading technologies, ‘Creating the Future’ is very much at the heart of what we support here at Mouser, and we are excited to help design engineers and want to thank them for their important contributions. Engineers really deserve the credit for the amazing ingenuity we are seeing today in electronic design."

“Mouser is known worldwide for their rapid introduction of the newest products, and unparalleled support of innovation,” said Joseph Pramberger, publisher of NASA Tech Briefs. “We are excited for the opportunity to work with such a solid partner – one known in the industry for their strong commitment to foster and serve engineers and their design needs.”
