Orion Fans Develops Higher Voltage DC Fan Series for Telecom Applications

    07/31/2011

Dallas-based Orion Fans, a division of Knight Electronics and a leading manufacturer of standard and custom AC and DC fans, trays and accessories, has developed a new line of DC fans that are ideal for telecom applications. Designated the OD1238-60HB Series, the fans operate using input voltage from 36VDC to 72VDC, making them suitable for telecommunications equipment due to their ability to accept these higher voltage inputs without sustaining damage. The DC fans measure 120mm x 38mm (4.7" x 1.5") and deliver airflows of 115 cubic feet per minute (CFM). "Fans specified for use in telecom applications typically carry a nominal voltage rating of 48 volts; however, when operating in battery mode, many telecom systems can experience voltages up to 56 volts, which has the potential to damage a standard 48VDC fan," said John Knight, vice president of Knight Electronics/Orion Fans. "The new OD1238-60HB Series fans are an ideal solution for the telecom market because of their wider input voltage than standard 48VDC fans." The OD1238-60HB Series fans are constructed with PBT, UL94V-0 plastic frame and impeller. The fans feature a dual ball bearing system and an auto restart, IC-protected brushless DC motor with input voltage ratings from 36 to 72VDC and a nominal voltage of 60VDC. Airflow is 115 CFM, with speeds rated at 2600 revolutions per minute (RPM) and maximum static pressure from 0.30H2O. Options available include tachometer output, locked rotor alarm and IP55-sealing as well as pulse width modulation (PWM) and constant speed controls. Operating temperature ranges from -20°C to +70°C, with a life expectancy (L10) of 65,000 hours at 45°C. Low volume OEM pricing for the OD1238-60HB DC fans is $24 and lead time is stock to 8 weeks.
