Power Partners and SmartSenseCom are developing the Intelligent Distribution Transformer (IDT) using sensing technology licensed from the U.S. Navy. At the ABB Automation & Power World conference and exhibition, ABB's premier customer gathering, held this year in Orlando, Tom Lopp, vice president of marketing, Power Partners, and Jack Barker, chief operating officer of SmartSenseCom, are presenting a paper on this subject at ABB Automation & Power World on Wednesday, March 27 (3:00 p.m., #41260). Capabilities of the IDT package include steady-state transformer monitoring, connectivity mapping, reporting of anomalies such as rapid changes in voltage, current, temperature and pressure, smart metering at the transformer, and distributed control and protection applications. The unique sensors are highly accurate and stable in harsh environments, are not subject to saturation, have almost no temperature variation and consume little power. "The Intelligent Distribution Transformer that PPI and SSC are developing fits into the overall Smart Grid initiative because remote feedback of voltage and current data can allow utilities to fine tune the distribution system for its most efficient operation for any given time of the day or year," stated Luke Faulstick, president and CEO, Power Partners.
