Roger Hedding to Chair IEEE's Power Systems Relay Committee

At their January 2013 meeting in Memphis, Tennessee, the Power Systems Relay Committee (PSRC) put Roger Hedding of ABB at the helm. Roger is an IEEE senior member, having joined IEEE's Power Engineering Society as a student member in the late 1960s. He has been an active member of the PSRC since 1991. Roger began his professional career at Westinghouse Electric after earning his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He later moved to ABB after ABB's 1989 acquisition of Westinghouse. Roger is currently a senior consulting engineer for ABB's North American Substation Automation Products business which is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Roger is involved in product development for the ANSI market. The PSRC was established as a technical committee of IEEE's Power Engineering Society (PES) in 1935. Membership is comprised of utilities, manufacturing, government and consulting organizations. The PSRC develops, reviews and amends IEEE standards where the dominant factors are the application, design, construction and operation of protection and control relays and systems. The PSRC is organized into six technical sub-committees: Systems Protection, Line Protection, Relaying Communications, Relaying Practices, Rotating Machinery and Substation Protection and at any given time there are as many as 88 working groups focused on reviewing, revising or developing a standard, guide or report. Roger assumes the role from Robert Pettigrew of TRC Companies, and will serve as chair until January 2015. He continues a long tradition of ABB's participation and dedication to the IEEE PSRC community, following in the footsteps of industry legends Walt Elmore (PSRC chair 1983-1984) and Lou Blackburn (PSRC chair 1970-1971). PSRC's next meeting is scheduled for May 13-16 in Baltimore, Maryland and is open to those professionals interested in furthering protection and control relay and systems technologies.
