    BD1865GWL synchronous-boost DC/DC converter IC

ROHM’s compact, high-efficiency, high-power, synchronous-boost DC/DC converter IC can improve performance and extend battery life in portables

    03/10/2016

ROHM has recently announced the availability of a compact, high-efficiency, high-power synchronous-boost DC/DC converter IC optimized for single-cell battery applications. Many of today’s portable devices (i.e. smartphones and tablets) are driven by single-cell li-ion batteries that deliver an output of approximately 4.2V at full charge. However, when connecting to interfaces requiring 5V output, such as USB, HDMI, and audio amps for speakers, a DC/DC converter is needed to boost the voltage. At the same time, longer battery life along with greater efficiency are demanded in a smaller form factor.

In response, the BD1865GWL features a lower operating limit of 2.5V, prolonging battery life in devices by extending operation down from the conventional 2.7V. In addition, two operating modes are built in, PWM/PFM mode and ROHM’s original mixing PWM mode. The former ensures up to 90% efficiency across all load regions, while the latter prevents unwanted switching noise in audio applications. The BD1865GWL is also capable of delivering output currents up to 2A in a compact 1.6mm x 1.6mm package, contributing to greater end-product miniaturization.

    Key Features
    1. Low voltage drive prolongs battery life
When the remaining battery level is low, the input voltage into the system (battery output voltage) decreases. Utilizing industry-leading analog design technology cultivated over many years have allowed ROHM to deliver stable 5V output even at input voltages as low as 2.5V, extending battery life considerably.
    2. Two control modes improve efficiency and performance
      • PFM/PWM Mode
This mode automatically switches between PFM and PWM modes based on the load, ensuring high efficiency throughout the entire load range.
      • Mixing PWM Mode
An original control method that provides higher efficiency than typical PWM at light loads and prevents unwanted audible noise from being generated during switching, making it ideal for high fidelity audio systems.
    3. High power in a space-saving surface mount package
Typically, two or more ICs or one large IC are required in order to obtain an output current of 2A. However, increasing the size of the IC and/or total board area can become problematic, particularly in portable devices that demand smaller components. The BD1865GWL can deliver 5V/2A output in a compact 1.6mm x 1.6mm package.

An evaluation board is also available that makes it possible to immediately begin evaluation (please inquire).
