STMicroelectronics Named Among Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations

    02/16/2012

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, has announced that for the third year in succession it has been ranked among the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations" by Corporate Knights[1], a company dedicated to promoting "clean capitalism." In the 2012 list announced on January 25, ST advanced 8 places to the 75th place on the list, compared to No. 83 in 2011 and No. 87 in 2010. It is one of the only three semiconductor manufacturers to be included in the Global 100 list. To compile the Global 100 list, Corporate Knights and its partners evaluated some 3,500 premier companies around the world to produce a short list of 350 companies that they then ranked transparently using a range of sustainability indicators, such as energy, water and waste productivity, safety record, innovation capacity, employee turnover and promptness in paying taxes. "We are proud that our efforts are recognized by independent organizations such as Corporate Knights," said Alain Denielle, Corporate Sustainable Development Group Vice President, STMicroelectronics. "This ranking among global leaders in sustainability is further proof of our long-standing belief that integrating sustainability and responsibility into our business activities is not a cost burden but a recipe for even greater success. For the past 25 years, we've been helping people get more from technology to get more from life and we're simultaneously contributing to preserve the planet. We will continue to follow this path as a world leader in innovation for sustainable development through excellence in our people, our products, the environment and the community." ST was an early pioneer of environmental responsibility and, in 1995, took the pioneering step of publishing its first Environmental Decalogue. Today, these Environment, Health and Safety measurable targets are included in a larger Sustainability strategy addressing many more domains such social issues, responsible products, partnerships in R&D or management of sustainability in ST supply chain. "The companies in our Global 100 are shining examples of a cleaner capitalism, where companies succeed by delivering win-win outcomes for society and the bottom line," said Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights, Inc. "Since 2005, the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations have achieved a total return of 41.70%, outperforming the MSCI All Country World Index by more than 11%. We hope this exemplary outperformance will inspire all companies to follow the example of ST and the other Global 100 corporations in pursuing the path to sustainable growth." Since its inception in 1987, ST has received numerous awards for environmental and social responsibility, at the local and global level, and is included in the main sustainability indices. www.st.com
