Toshiba Electronics Europe (TEE) has announced an ultra-compact, extended temperature photocoupler that will help designers to meet safety isolation requirements while saving board space in robotics, conveyors and many other industrial power and motion control applications. The new TLP104 photocoupler is supplied in an S06 package and features a minimum isolation voltage rating of 3750Vrms. Along with a guaranteed extended temperature operation of -40°C to 125°C, this combination of size and isolation rating allows designers to minimise the space required for the isolation interfaces between high-voltage and logic circuitry in a variety of industrial motor control and inverter-based designs. Toshiba's TLP104 features an inverter logic, open collector output and supports requirements for high-speed operation thanks to a design that optically couples GaAlAs LEDs with high-speed, high-gain photodetectors. This ensures maximum propagation delay times down to just 400ns. In addition, as the maximum switching time dispersion is only 400ns, the new TLP104 is suitable for the control of Intelligent Power Modules (IPMs). As with other members of Toshiba's photocoupler family the TLP104 has a wide output capability, in this case supporting output voltages from -0.5V to 30V. An internal Faraday shield guarantees a minimum common mode transient immunity of ±15kV/μs. The TLP104 has board mounting dimensions of just 7.0mm x 3.7mm and a low profile of only 2.2mm.
