Amazon to Test Out Autonomous Delivery Robots

Amazon Prime Air might be stuck in legal limbo, but the e-commerce giant is exploring other ways to deliver parcels – like ground-based autonomous robots.

The company’s fully electric Scout robot is about the size of a small cooler and rolls around neighborhoods at a walking pace. Amazon’s been testing the bot’s ability to navigate around pets, pedestrians, and other obstacles, and in their initial trials in Snohomish County, Washington, the Scouts will be shadowed by a company employee.

“At Amazon, we continually invest in new technologies to benefit customers,” said the vice president of Amazon Scout, Sean Scott, in a blog post. “We’ve been hard at work developing a new, fully-electric delivery system – Amazon Scout – designed to safely get packages to customers using autonomous delivery devices.”

Of course, with their modest speed, company chaperone, and – one would assume – low weight limit, the Scouts aren’t exceedingly practical.

But with successful test cases and positive community feedback, Amazon might be able to scale-up their delivery robots.
