The US Army recently commenced operations on its 10-MW photovoltaic system at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.

Designed, built, and maintained by SunPower Corp. (with financing from Regions Bank), the project is a joint effort between private industry, the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Principally, the PV system is designed to be compatible with a future micro-grid.

Strategically, the project aligns with several government mandates, including Title 10 USC § 2911, which stipulates that 25% of energy consumed on all DOD facilities come from renewable sources, and the Army Energy Security Implementation Strategy, which requires at least five installations be “energy neutral” (energy consumed is equal to the energy generated) by 2025 and deploy 1 GW of renewable  energy within the same timeframe.

“We’ve cost-effectively built a reliable, home-grown renewable energy project that is expected to deliver savings for decades, allowing us to invest more resources in protecting the nation and those we serve,” said Lt. Gen. Edward M. Daly, Senior Commander, Redstone Arsenal.

The DOD is the largest energy hog within the federal government, so a healthy dose of green energy is sorely needed.
