I Have a Serious Case of Battery Envy

The iPhone XR

CNET just published a fun little piece about the “7 phones with the best battery life,” and I’m not ashamed to admit it gave me all kinds of envy. The iPhone’s battery is famously underpowered, and while an iPhone did make the list, it wasn’t mine. Not even close.

No, the one Apple product on the list is the iPhone XR, with its alleged battery life of 19 hours, 53 minutes. Of course, that’s based on continuous video playback in Airplane mode, not an altogether useful stat unless you’re travelling. Data usage – especially streaming and geolocator apps – sucks the juice down especially quick.

Apple’s site claims my iPhone, the 7, gets 12 hours of net usage on LTE, 13 hours of wireless video playback, and 14 hours of talktime on 3G. Add in GPS or other geolocation programs and its battery life dips dramatically. With multiple data-starved apps running, my iPhone barely lasts an hour.

For the record, the Motorola Moto G7 Power took the top spot, with a runtime of 23 hours, 10 minutes, while the Huawei P30 Pro was second with 22 hours, 57 minutes.

I won’t pretend like I don’t have some serious battery envy right about now.
