    Program Certifies Solid-State Batteries as Safe from Thermal Propagation

    ­Another company has certified their solid-state batteries safe from the pervasive threat of thermal propagation, pushing the next-gen energy storage tech ever closer towards the mainstream.

    To whit – Blue Solutions and AVL announced the successful completion of a joint evaluation program, with the goal of demonstrating the robustness of the former’s solid-state batteries and “advancing battery safety for next-generation cell technologies as they move toward industrial scale-up.”

    Though the companies were mum on details, the program apparently incorporated “advanced modeling, pressure-aware design, and safety-first architecture” to verify that their solid-state batteries were safe from thermal propagation and also to certify them against stringent requirements like New Energy Vehicle regulations (including and especially GB 38031-2025).

    Solid-state batteries carry a host of (theoretical) advantages over their lithium-ion cousins, not the least of which is higher energy density. Of course, the lack of a liquid electrolyte also goes a long way towards eliminating the thermal propagation that’s so endemic with lithium-ion batteries, but some degree of risk remains.

    According to their press release, the program not only addressed thermal propagation, but “Results demonstrated targets of up to 25% higher volumetric energy density compared to equivalent NMC Li-ion battery packs, alongside an expected 13% increase in gravimetric energy density as well.”
