Tesla to Build First Solar-Powered Neighborhood

Austin Mayor Steve Adler is tentatively onboard with the first solar-powered neighborhood in his backyard, but he hopes Tesla builds enough housing â€" already in short supply in Austin â€" to accommodate the influx of employees.

Tesla and a couple partners are moving forward with an ambitious project to demonstrate the widescale viability of residential solar.

Tesla Energy, along with Brookfield Asset Management and development firm Dacra, plan to create the nation’s most sustainable residential neighborhood, dubbed "SunHouse at Easton Park," in Austin, Texas.

Naturally, the solar neighborhood will spotlight Tesla’s photovoltaic technologies – specifically, Tesla V3 solar roof tiles – but the overall goal is to “reshape how people live.”

“The feedback we get from the solar and battery products used in this community will impact how we develop and launch new products," said Elon Musk.

But it’s not exactly full-steam ahead. While Tesla does have Austin’s support, Mayor Steve Adler didn’t sound entirely sold on the idea.

Like many major metropolitan areas, Austin was ravaged by Covid-19, and homelessness remains a serious problem in the Texas state capital.

So it’s understandable that one of Mayor Adler’s top concerns was Tesla building enough housing for the huge influx of employees to Austin.

Thus, Dacra’s goals for “SunHouse at Easton Park” reflected Austin’s troubles.

"Our goal is to establish that fully sustainable neighborhoods are not only viable but the best practical and economical choice," said Craig Robins, CEO of Dacra.
