Water-Based Battery is Non-Flammable

The Army released a list of the top 10 coolest science and technology advances of 2019, and one of them is of special interest to us – an aqueous lithium-ion battery that’s completely fireproof.

The University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory joined with Army scientists to address one of the biggest weaknesses of lithium-ion batteries – their tendency to overheat and cause ravenous flames that can’t be quenched with water.

"Our project addresses the risk by allowing high-energy or high-power batteries to be put on the Soldier with no risk of the batteries catching on fire," said Dr. Arthur von Wald Cresce, an Army materials engineer.

Their aqueous batteries replace the flammable electrolyte with a water-based solvent and use a lithium salt that allows them to be stored at a range of temperatures.

“If the battery’s temperature in storage happens to spike to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery won’t cease to operate,” Cresce added. “In fact, it’ll probably still operate the same.”
