    Dr. Johney Green to lead NREL Mechanical and Thermal Systems Engineering Research

    The Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has named Dr. Johney Green Jr. as Associate Laboratory Director for Mechanical and Thermal Systems Engineering. He will oversee the laboratory's transportation, buildings, wind, water and geothermal research programs.

    Green comes to NREL from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he has held a number of leadership roles including director of the Energy and Transportation Science Division and group leader for Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research. Green managed a broad science and technology portfolio and user facilities that made significant science and engineering advances in building technologies; sustainable industry and manufacturing; fuels, engines, emissions, and transportation analysis; and vehicle systems integration. It was during his tenure as a division director that ORNL developed the Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) demonstration project.

    "Johney's scientific accomplishments and leadership experience are a perfect fit for the laboratory's mechanical and thermal systems engineering research activities," NREL Director Martin Keller said. "He will have a significant role in strengthening our capabilities in buildings, wind, vehicles, and other key research areas. I am very pleased that Johney will be joining the NREL leadership team."

    Green also holds the position of adjunct research professor at the University of Tennessee and has served on numerous advisory boards for various organizations, including the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Memphis.

    He is a fellow of SAE International and is active in the National Academy of Engineering. He has received several awards during his career and holds two U.S. patents in combustion science. He is the lead or co-author of more than 40 technical publications. Green holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis and a master's and doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Green's first day with NREL will be August 15.
