The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has earned a Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association for demonstrating a commitment and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed generation and environmental initiatives that support the goal of providing safe, reliable, low-cost and sustainable electric service. During SEP Week (February 14 to February 18), designated utilities take the opportunity to shine a light on the SMART programs that have gone toward earning the designation.

“NYPA is proud to be recognized as an industry leader of smart energy best practices,” said NYPA Interim President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. “The SEP designation represents the Power Authority’s commitment to supporting responsible energy use, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting New York’s vibrant green economy.”

The SEP designation, which lasts for two years before utilities need to reapply, is held by fewer than 100 of the nation’s more than 2,000 public power utilities nationwide. NYPA was awarded the designation by the American Public Power Association in 2021 and was among 60 public power utilities nationwide to receive the inaugural SEP designation in 2019.

In 2021, NYPA completed energy efficiency projects at 106 locations in New York State for a total cost of more than $243 million. The projects will save NYPA customers more than $20 million in energy and maintenance costs annually while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in New York by nearly 37,000 metric tons every year—the equivalent of taking nearly 8,000 cars off the road. The Power Authority’s energy efficiency projects vary in scope and include interior and exterior LED lighting upgrades, heating and cooling improvements, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, among others.
