Sumida Introduces +165°C Metal Composite Power Inductors

Sumida Corporation, a global leader in inductive components and solutions, announced the availability of the MCDMCF201612/DS, a new high-temperature SMD power inductor engineered to operate reliably in environments where conventional inductors fall short. Featuring an operational temperature range of -55°C to +165°C (incl. self-temperature rise), the MCDMCF201612/DS sets a new benchmark for compact power inductors, surpassing the +125°C limit that defines most competing products on the market today.

Measuring just 2.2 × 1.8 × 1.2 mm maximum, the MCDMCF201612/DS delivers high-current capability in one of the smallest footprints available at this performance level.  This enables dense, thermally demanding board layouts without sacrificing reliability or longevity.

    Breaking the +125°C Barrier

As processor power densities rise and power delivery networks are placed in closer proximity to heat-generating components, thermal stress on passive components intensifies. Automotive underhood electronics, industrial motor drives, and high-performance AI compute modules all face this challenge directly. The MCDMCF201612/DS eliminates the conservative derating calculations engineers have historically needed to apply to standard-rated inductors, providing a genuine +40°C advantage that translates directly into improved system reliability and design confidence.

    Technology and Key Features

The MCDMCF201612/DS utilizes a magnetically shielded metal composite core construction that enables large current flow with low electromagnetic interference (EMI) and low core loss. This design also delivers higher energy density than ferrite-based alternatives, supporting efficient power conversion in space-constrained designs.

    Key specifications and features include:

    ·       Operating temperature range: -55°C to +165°C

    ·       Package size: 2.2 × 1.8 × 1.2 mm maximum (ultra-low profile)

    ·       Metal composite core for higher energy densityand performance in noise-sensitive environments

    ·       Magnetically shielded for low EMI

    ·       High current capability with low core loss

    ·       Inductance values from 0.22 μH to 1.50 μH

    ·       RoHS compliant and Halogen-Free

    Target Applications

The MCDMCF201612/DS is designed for applications where compact size, high current handling, and elevated thermal performance must coexist.

Automotive— Underhood power management, ADAS processing units, EV battery management systems, and in-vehicle networking modules where ambient temperatures and proximity to powertrains routinely challenge standard inductor ratings. The +165°C capability supports AEC-Q200-aligned design practices and reduces the risk of field failures in thermally aggressive environments.

Industrial— Motor drive controls, programmable logic controllers, robotics, and factory automation equipment operating in high-ambient or enclosed enclosures near heat-generating machinery. The wide -55°C to +165°C range also accommodates outdoor and cold-climate installations without component substitution.

High-Performance & AI Computing— Voltage regulator modules (VRM) for CPUs, GPUs, and AI accelerators where high switching frequencies, dense board layouts, and rising TDP (Thermal Design Power) levels generate significant localized heat at the point of load. The low 1.2 mm profile supports tight board-to-board and heatsink clearances common in server and edge computing platforms.

Power Conversion Infrastructure— Thin on-board power supply modules for network switching and routing equipment, DC/DC converters in distributed power systems, and POL converters where both thermal headroom and board real estate are at a premium.
