FedEx Invests in 1,000 Electric Delivery Trucks

FedEx plans to add 1,000 electric delivery trucks to its fleet, saving 2,000 gallons of fuel annually. And just in time.

The international parcel service handles an average of 14 million parcels daily, and all that activity burns a ton of energy. 1,000 trucks is a drop in the bucket – and the company’s acquisition of 20 Tesla Semi trucks is a mere goodwill gesture – but it’s a good start.

FedEx will buy 100 Chanje V8100 vans – courtesy of Chinese manufacturer FDG Electric Vehicles Ltd – and they’ll lease the remaining 900 from the U.S.-based Ryder System, Inc.

The Chanje V8100 vehicles sport a 150-mile range, with a load capacity of 6,000 lbs, storage capacity of 675 cubic feet, and an electric motor with 198 horsepower. Along with the fuel savings, they’ll avoid 20 tons of emissions per vehicle each year.

"Our investment in these vehicles is part of our commitment to that approach of serving our customers and connecting the world responsibly and resourcefully," said Mitch Jackson, FedEx chief sustainability officer.
