Electrify America to Deploy 2,000 Fast Chargers on Roads by The End of 2019

We’ll never sell electric cars to John Q. Midwest – and anyone with a longer commute – until we solve the issue of “range anxiety.” Tesla's Supercharger network is a great start, and Electrify America is following up with 2,000 fast chargers at a total of 484 charging stations by the end of 2019.

Each charging station, offering from 4-10 CCS1 chargers, will accommodate vehicles that charge in the range of 50kW, 150kW, or 350kW. You’ll be able to find the charging spots in 17 metro areas and on highways in 39 states, and the former will offer J1772 level 2 chargers for retro EVs.

Of course, range anxiety isn’t the only roadblock to the wider deployment of EVs. Gas-powered vehicles are cheaper -- lithium-ion battery electric vehicles (BEVs) cost anywhere from 44-60% more than internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) over a 20-year vehicle lifetime (according to a 2015 Arthur D. Little study), though the same study notes that the cost differential will narrow by 2025.

Additional research from Bloomberg New Energy Finance suggests that, within the same timeframe, cheaper battery costs will actually make EVs more affordable than gas-powered vehicles.

This plus the added EV infrastructure from Tesla, Electrify America, and likely several others will go a long way towards selling electric cars to the general public.
