Germany's EV Registrations Pass 2 Million

Germany just passed the 2 million mark for battery-electric vehicle registrations, while the nation experienced a monumental bounceback year for EVs in 2025.

As of January 2026, a total of 2,034,260 BEVs were registered throughout Deutschland. And while – like most nations – Germany’s auto industry took a beating during the pandemic, they’ve since come roaring back, and battery-electric cars have risen from 34,022 vehicles in 2017 to 2 million+ today.

Of course, these figures still lag behind China – and its astronomical 22 million+ EVs on the road and 70% of global EV production – but even within the EV-friendly EU, Germany stands out.

While battery electric vehicles achieved an EU market share just north of 17%, Germany saw robust growth of 43.2% year-over-year, good for an overall EV market share of 30-35%.

In fact, BEVs aren’t the preferred new energy vehicles in the broader EU, where hybrid vehicles (and their 34.5% market share) are the undisputed king. This breakdown roughly holds true in Germany, though at least there, the overall NEV share is rising exponentially.

Why is Germany’s NEV market booming? A lot of it has to do with tightening federal mandates but also some very generous subsidies. According to Forbes, Germany’s EV mandates are linked to incomes, with €10,000 ($11,800) available to households earning less than €80,000 ($94.300), rising to €90,000 ($106,100) with two children.

No surprise, then, that Grand View Horizon projects EVs in Germany to rise at a compound annual growth rate of 34.8% from 2025 to 2030, reaching $548,820.1 million by 2030.
