The World's Largest Electric Ferry

The roads aren’t the only place hosting EV innovation – just last month, the world's largest all-electric ferry completed its maiden voyage.

The “E-Ferry Ellen” sports a capacity of 4.3 MWh, with a top speed of 15.5 knots (17.8 mph), and on August 15th, it connected the ports of Søby and Fynshav in southern Denmark.

And when I say “world’s largest,” I’m not exaggerating – the ferry is 60 x 13 meters, able to carry 30 vehicles and 200 passengers, and according to the company, each vessel can save over 2,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Its battery pack is supposedly the largest ever installed in a vessel – 4x the size of prior all-electric ferries – and the company claims the E-Ferry Ellen “promotes energy efficient, zero GHG emission and air pollution, free waterborne transportation.”

The object is to “demonstrate a 100% electric, emission free, medium sized ferry for passengers and cars, trucks and cargo1 in full-scale operation on longer distances than previously seen (> 5 nautical miles (Nm)) for electric drive train ferries,” according to the company.

The marine battery market will supposedly double by 2020, and global marine hybrid propulsion should reach $5.2 billion by 2024, so this is a huge development and a giant step towards green transport on the waterways.
